The Department of Botany was established in 1967, marking the beginning of a long and distinguished journey in the field of plant sciences at G.V.N. College (Autonomous), Kovilpatti). Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to imparting quality education and promoting scientific understanding of the plant world. The Undergraduate Programme in Botany was introduced in 1972, offering a three-year course structured under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework. The programme comprises six semesters of six months each and is designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in various branches of plant science, including taxonomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, and biotechnology. Responding to the growing demand for advanced learning and research in biological sciences, the department introduced the Postgraduate Programme in Botany in 2020. This two-year programme, consisting of four semesters, emphasizes higher-order learning, analytical skills, research methodology, and exposure to modern techniques in plant science. Over the decades, the Department of Botany has evolved into a vibrant academic unit that combines teaching, research, and community outreach. The department takes pride in its distinguished faculty members, who possess expertise across diverse areas such as plant taxonomy, environmental biology, microbiology, plant physiology, and biotechnology. Faculty members are actively involved in research and publication, contributing significantly to the advancement of knowledge in their respective domains. 1 In addition to academic excellence, the department plays a crucial role in promoting environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation through various initiatives such as field studies, herbal garden maintenance, and eco awareness campaigns. The department also encourages student entrepreneurship and innovation through the “Earn While You Learn” initiative and the College Company – Padaippukoodai, which enables students to create and market plant-based eco-friendly products. Through its consistent efforts, the Department of Botany has produced generations of graduates who have excelled as academicians, researchers, educators, and environmental advocates. The department continues to uphold its commitment to academic innovation, research excellence, and societal contribution, nurturing young minds to understand, explore, and protect the green wealth of our planet.
