About PBT Department!

The Department of Plant biology & Plant biotechnology has since its inception grown in stature and standard. It has a qualified faculty of four teachers who, besides teaching, have also been pursuing research. The major areas of their Current research interests include Plant Physiology, Molecular Ecology & Population Genetics.

Department of Plant biology & Plant biotechnology is in tune with the current developments and aims at producing graduates well versed in applied areas of plant sciences. It also imparts skill based training in areas such as Plant tissue culture, Floriculture, Horticulture, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Medicinal botany etc., to train the students to have more job opportunities or become entrepreneurs by themselves.

Our Association

  • Dr. E.G.Wesley, Assistant Professor, Aringar Anna Government Arts College, Namakkal gave a guest lecture on “Career opportunity in Biology” on 30.09.2016. The Elected student office bearers of Department Association and Nature Club were declared in the meeting.
  • Dr. K. Selvaraj, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, Sri Kaleswari College, Sivakasi delivered a talk on Bioremediation on 1.3.2017.
  • Dr. M. Ramamoorthy gave a talk on “Wild Life Conservation” in connection with the world forest day celebration on 21.03.2017.

B)  Seminar & Workshops

  • The Department Association and the Nature Club conducted a State Level Seminar on “A view on Biodiversity of Flora and its Conservation” on 1.02.2017. Special seminar was delivered by Dr. R. Ramasubbu, Assistant Professor, Department of Biology, Gandhigram Rural University, Gandhigram on the topic “Floral Diversity and their importance”. The evening session was conducted by Dr. Satish Narayanan from Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Tirunelveli on the topic “Elephants in the floral biodiversity maintenance process”.

C)  Extension Activities

  • In Association with NSS we organized a ‘Medicinal Plant Exhibition” for the Puthu Appaneri village people. Medicinal Practitioner Mr. Parameshwaran showed over 100 medicinal plant varieties and 64 herbal medicines.
  • Dr. M. Ramamoorthy, Associate Professor and Head had attended 10 th International Rangeland Congress, Saskatoon, Canada from July 16-22’ 2016.
  • Dr. B. Makesh Kumar, Assistant Professor had attended an International Conference on 29 th International Symposium on the Chemistry and Natural Products and the 9 th International Conference on Biodiversity at Izmir, Turkey from September 22-29, 2016.
